Department of Food and Nutritional Sciences home

The Department uniquely reflects the integration of food science, nutritional sciences and dietetics to meet the growing demands for safe and nutritious foods, bioproducts and healthy human environments. Recognised nationally and internationally as one of the premiere academic leaders, it provides a solid grounding in the physical, biochemical and nutritional sciences as well as an understanding of the sociological, cultural and behavioural forces that influence attitudes about food and nutrition in the real world. In addition, students are directly involved in the community through internships and experiential activities in a unique hands-on learning environment. The Department has a strong record of placement of its highly competent graduates as, for example, a dietician, clinical nutritionist, dietetic consultant, food service manager, or on postgraduate programmes.

Department of Catering and Culinary Services home

Catering and culinary services are passions combined into a rewarding career in the food preparation industry, a large one providing an abundance of jobs. As successful caterers must have a strong foundation in business and the culinary arts industry, students of the Department are trained to understand the culinary world like a chef, but with the business savvy of an entrepreneur. They are trained by its own prestigious academic staff together with international award-winning chefs on every aspect of professional catering and food preparation. Its courses also include internships and special culinary practicums. Many graduates of the Department choose to work for hotels, restaurants, or food and beverage related enterprises, while others choose to run their own businesses or to move on to postgraduate or specialist training.

Department of Food Science and Biotechnology home

Food science relates to all aspects of agricultural food materials, while biotechnology deals with the technology of utilising organisms to create new processes or to modify existing ones. Internationally renowned for its programmes, the Department employs a multidisciplinary approach combining food science and biotechnology for updated information and technology. It is student-centred and committed to excellence in education, research and service, providing every possible opportunity for students to gain work experience by participating in field trainings or internships. They are also encouraged to participate in research works with the academic staff. For graduates of the Department, career opportunities are available in a wide range of services including food product development, production management, purchasing and distribution, quality assurance, marketing, market inspection and management, and food law enforcement.

Department of Animal Source Foods home

Studies in animal source foods encompass a wide range of disciplines including physiology, dietetics, immunology, biology, genomics, animal husbandry and engineering. In support of sustainable animal production systems, the Department makes every effort to improve the health and wellbeing of animals in production systems, and enhance the quality, utilisation and safety of food products. In pursuit of academic excellence, the Department offers programmes that provide students with a solid base of information and concepts. Students are encouraged to partake in a variety of extracurricular activities and internships with the animal industry and government agencies. Equipped with the necessary knowledge, skills and attitude, graduates of the Department go on to postgraduate schools, or directly to work in the fields of livestock production, processing, marketing and safety management.
